Hope and Daniel left Zander alone to fume over the fact that they had beat him to the conclusion that the murder weapon had been taken from the tool room. He wasn’t the keen detective he had been in his youth, and Hope could tell it was starting to get to Zander. Instead of listening to him grumble about Hope not being a real detective, which was in all honesty true, she and Daniel made an excuse to step away. Daniel walked alongside her down the corridors back toward Hope’s stateroom, escorting her.

“You really think you can figure out who snapped that line?” Daniel asked Hope.

“I think I can,” Hope said. “I mean, it’s not like it would be my first time helping out with this sort of thing.”

“Your father was a detective, right?” Daniel asked.

“Chief of Police of Washington D.C. actually,” Hope said proudly. “And he was good. Plus, Mom was an investigative reporter. I grew up listening to them solve cases, so I kind of know what I’m doing. I’m no professional or anything, and I don’t pretend to be, but I definitely learned what sort of questions to ask to get to the bottom of things. I learned that from them.”

“You and Felix helped each other before,” Daniel said. “You solved a case together, actually, didn’t you?”

“You could say that,” Hope said. “We solved a murder, but the painting that had been stolen in the process was never found.”

“So why did you and Felix work that one together anyways?” Daniel asked. “I mean, neither of you are detectives, so how did that come about? Is it because you two are dating?”

Hope stopped walking and spun on her heels to face him head on. “Dating? What gives you the idea that Fitter and I are dating?”

Daniel tried to hide it, but she noticed the look of relief on his face. “So, you’re not?” he asked, his face turning slightly red.

“Fitter is more of an irritation than anything else,” Hope assured him, but she found herself turning red in the face as well. “Why are you so interested in my non-existent relationship with Fitter anyhow?”

“I mean, all the ladies on the ship do call him Fine Felix, and you’ve gotten quite a few enemies because he obviously has a thing for you,” Daniel said with a smirk, uncomfortably rubbing the back of his head like he wished he could take back what he had said. “I mean, there are a few ladies who are pretty jealous about how much attention he shows you, you know? And, you’re telling me that you’re fighting him off with a stick, is that right?”

“Pretty much,” Hope said. “But, why does that matter?”

“Well,” Daniel said, and now he looked incredibly uncomfortable. “Well, maybe because I was trying to figure out if it would be appropriate to ask you out on a date. You know, if you’re interested.”

Hope felt a slight lump form in her throat. Where had this come from all of a sudden?
